Xiaoshan special education recognized as UN good practice

A case on improving special education submitted by Xiaoshan district, Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang province was included in the list of Sustainable Development Goals Good Practices, according to the official website of the United Nations' Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

According to the department, a total of 464 cases were included in the list, including 29 cases from China. Among them, three were cases submitted by Zhejiang.

Over the past few years, Xiaoshan has aimed to develop a fair and high-quality special education system to ensure that no children and teenagers are left aside.

Last year, the district's special education system expanded its enrollment age span from 3-15 years old to 3-18 years old.

Xiaoshan has made strong efforts to install more special education facilities and hire sufficient teachers, with the goal of ensuring that the teacher to student ratio of special education schools reaches 1:3.

The district has set up a work force that carries out thematic teaching and research activities regularly to promote the professional growth of special education teachers. In addition, it works with the district's Disabled Persons Federation to provide rehabilitation equipment and services to students in need. The district's health bureau also offers medical services and technology for differently-abled students.

China's special education programs are designed for children and teenagers with physical or mental disabilities, with a variety of schools set up for students with specific challenges.
