The team at indie children’s book publisher Code Pineapple has partnered with author and father of two Mike Glatzer to create “Grandpa Saved the Day...Again!”
The first book in a new series, it celebrates grandparents and encourages family bonding with a hilariously fun story and stunning, watercolor-style illustrations.
In this book, a young boy named Sam fears he has a snooze-worthy day ahead with his weird, old Grandpa Moose. But this “boring day” soon turns into a crime-solving adventure, and by the end, Sam recognizes his grandpa as a real-life hero!
Author Mike Glatzer was inspired to write "Grandpa Saved the Day...Again!" out of a desire for his kids to appreciate the amazing elders in their lives and experience that special grandparent-grandchild bond.
“All these people have had fantastic careers and adventures and they have great wisdom and talents to share,” says Glatzer. “I wanted to create something that celebrates all this and brings everybody together.”
Mike brought the book idea to Don Wilson and Devin Cowick, co-founders of Code Pineapple, in August 2020.
Ms. Cowick reveals that she and Mr. Wilson were waiting in line outside Ikea when they received a message from Mike Glatzer with a kids book idea.
“Don started reading the story out loud to me and everyone around us,” says Cowick. “It was such an amazing mix of hilarious and heart-warming. We knew we had to help Mike bring this book to life.”
This week, the team launched "Grandpa Saved the Day...Again!" on Kickstarter, a crowdfunding platform focused on creativity.
“We decided to launch on Kickstarter because it allows fans to be more involved in the process,” says Cowick. “Also, it's a more exciting pre-order event!”
Upon successful completion of the ‘Grandpa’ campaign, the team has plans to launch a ‘Grandma’ book, likely in the Fall.
“This is just the beginning for the grandparent book series,” says Cowick. “The last year has been tough. We’ve been separated from friends and family, especially grandparents. The silver lining is that we’ve gained a renewed appreciation for our relationships and connections. Grandparents are awesome! Let's celebrate them.”
Mike Glatzer and his partners at Code Pineapple are excited to see how "Grandpa Saved the Day...Again!" is received by fans, and hope that it serves as a conversation starter and a shared bonding experience that builds lasting memories for years to come.
Glatzer tells us, “when your kid asks you to read it over and over and over again, which you know they will during bedtime, you certainly won’t mind.”
