Kroger Expands Relationship with Groceries Pick, Pack and Delivery Firm, Instacart
—
As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, shoppers migrated to online shopping rapidly and in huge numbers in 2020. The U.S. Grocery industry was impacted in profound ways, as millions of consumers shifted almost overnight from in-store shopping to placing orders online for curbside pickup, contactless pickup, or home delivery.
Seeking to capitalize on the shift to online shopping and to accelerate its share of the growing e-commerce revenue pie, this week Kroger, which operates more than 2700 stores nationwide under such banners as Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Fry’s, Mariano’s and Smith’s, launched a rapid-delivery option in collaboration with Instacart.
In a company release, Kroger’s CEO Rodney McMullen said, “Last year, Kroger achieved more than $10 billion in e-commerce sales, and we’re committed to doubling both our digital sales and profitability rate by the end of 2023 and expect Kroger Delivery Now will help us reach that target”.
Kroger Delivery Now shoppers will be able to place orders online for an array of 25,000 items either on the website of their local Kroger chain or via the Instacart Marketplace. Instacart claims their Marketplace includes “more than 300 retailers and trusted local grocers.”
In promotional materials, Kroger boasts that the new service “establishes Kroger as the first grocery retailer to directly provide a national convenience delivery solution.” Online shoppers will have the chance to order “fresh food, household essentials, meal solutions, and snacks throughout the day, from early morning to late at night,” and receive delivery “in as fast as 30 minutes.”
The Kroger-Instacart relationship dates back to 2017. In 2019 the companies expanded their partnership to include the delivery of alcohol from nearly 1,500 Kroger-owned stores across 15 states. Currently, the partnership offers home-delivery of groceries in two hours’ time.
