United States of America - October 27, 2022 /MarketersMEDIA/ —
Natasha McKenzie has had a successful career so far in political fundraising. Despite being so young, she spent much of her time cultivating her skills, building relationships, and improving her community, all through her work in politics. We sat down with Natasha McKenzie to learn more about her illustrious career in the political sector and her goals for the future of her career.
“I started in politics by working for the DC Democratic Party, working my way up to becoming the executive director,” says Natasha McKenzie. Early in her career, she had the opportunity to work with a DC Councilmember, and through that work, she recognized her love for political fundraising.
Natasha McKenzie says, “One of my favorite things was handling the fundraising aspect of the job. Managing the budget, raising the money, and working directly with my boss at the time a DC Councilmember. On their re-election campaign for city council, I helped with the fundraising apparatus, and that's how I started out in political fundraising.“
Thanks to her work with a DC Councilmember, and the relationships she formed while working in DC politics, Natasha McKenzie received the opportunity to further her political fundraising skills nationally. As a result, she began working as a fundraiser for the DSCC (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee).
“When I went to work at the DSCC, I worked with about 24 states in the Midwest and South. So I did direct fundraising for individuals and the 2020 cycle. We raised over $11 million, and we were also helpful in Georgia during the runoff election,” says Natasha McKenzie.
Throughout her career, she faced many rewarding moments but also some difficult ones that she managed to get through thanks to the support from her mentors in the political field. When asked about what she has learned during that time, Natasha McKenzie says, “One of the things I have learned working in politics, is it's a combat sport. It's not a physical sport, but it's very much a mental sport. So it's learning many skill sets, which is just not common in other professions.”
When we asked her about the skills she learned, Natasha McKenzie described her ability to navigate a workspace, manage a campaign, and converse with potential donors as skills she all developed, thanks to her career. However, when it came to dealing with difficult moments, she says, “I’m grateful I learned these skills because it's such a hard profession, especially when dealing with difficult moments. An example is dealing with difficult personalities.”
She would manage to work through difficult personalities by learning how to defend herself and her opinions without letting people push back on her. Her supporters in the political field also lifted her up. “I'm very thankful to black women in this space that helped me, especially when I needed them,” says Natasha McKenzie.
Regarding her future, Natasha McKenzie hopes to continue her work in political fundraising and utilize that to build up people's lives. She says, “I would love to one day, be at a firm, or run a firm, for candidates that are running for statewide office, especially candidates of color, to help them raise money from a diverse donor pool so that they feel like they have all the tools to win and be successful.”
When asked what motivates her to continue to work towards growing her career, Natasha McKenzie says, “At the end of the day especially for me, it's important to just keep pushing forward.”
