Garden For Wildlife’s First Year Of Offering Native Plant Collections A Buzzing Success

By: Get News
In 2021, the Garden for Wildlife community planted 4,212 native plant wildlife gardens.

For almost 50 years, Garden for Wildlife™  by National Wildlife Federation has been encouraging the population to plant with a purpose using native plants that support wildlife. In April of 2021, they introduced Garden for Wildlife Native Plant Collections making it easier than ever for people to help the planet right outside their door. These curated native plant collections attract and support the highest numbers of wildlife, based on science. The plants are grown sustainably by independent, regional growers and shipped with garden design ideas and planting tips directly to consumers in select states across the country.

This effort from Garden for Wildlife had great success in its first year. Over 4,000 native plant wildlife gardens were planted, creating more than 200,000 square feet of new wildlife habitat in 21 states. These new wildlife gardens serve as many as 102 unique species of native bees, 144 unique species of butterflies, and 96% of backyard birds.

Alongside the creation of these new wildlife gardens, National Wildlife Federation reached over 270,000 total certified wildlife habitats across the country. In addition, the public community surrounding Garden for Wildlife is growing rapidly across social media platforms. The Garden for Wildlife message spread to mainstream media, including The Washington Post, HGTV, Earth911, Martha Stewart Living, Better Homes and Gardens, and many other respected media outlets.

To meet increased demand for the 2022 gardening season, Garden for Wildlife has added ten new plant collections and expanded into 16 more states. They are committed to building more grower relationships and offering more plants for all fifty states within the next several years, with the ultimate goal of reaching one million wildlife gardens planted by 2027.
