Jet Medical Tourism® Cites New US Research Suggesting Weight Loss Surgery Dramatically Cuts The Risk of Cancers in Women

By: PRLog

SAN DIEGO - June 10, 2020 - PRLog -- A Swedish study published in 2009 had claimed that bariatric surgery significantly reduced the risk of cancer in women, but not in men. Now, according to 2019 American study published in the prestigious Annals of Surgery has reiterated the same fact.

This study published in January 2019 reported that women who undergo sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass have lower risk of obesity-related cancers, including pancreatic cancer and gallbladder cancer, than men who get a bariatric procedure.

2019 Study Involved over 22,000 Morbidly Obese Patients

The Swedish Obese Subjects (SOS) research that was led by Swedish scientists ten years ago, focused on severely obese patients who underwent weight loss surgeries. To this day, this study remains the most definitive evidence on cancer risk and bariatric surgeries.

The new study led by American scientists also found that the risk of endometrial and breast cancers declines considerably in women who chose to go undergo bariatric surgery. This research studies about 1,236 patients who got a gastric band surgery; 6,047 patients who got a sleeve gastrectomy; and 13,545 patients who received a gastric bypass. It also includes another 1,350 patients who chose other types of bariatric surgery.

When scientists matched the data to about 66,000 severely obese patients who did not get bariatric surgery, the weight loss surgery indicated a clear association with a substantially reduced risk for cancer, especially in women.

Over the span of 3.5 years, the American researchers found that bariatric surgery patients (women) had a 33% reduced chance of developing any type of cancer compared with severely obese patients who did not undergo any weight-loss procedure.

Weight Loss is Not the Only Benefit

Both of these studies have proved that bariatric surgeries not only help the patients reduce unwanted weight, but also reduce the risk of several obesity-related diseases. Obesity has always been strongly associated with a heightened risk for different kinds of cancer, including liver and ovarian cancer.

By choosing bariatric surgery, a patient not only gets a more desirable body shape, but also enjoys a longer and healthier life.
