Thodos Dance Chicago and the Moscow Festival Ballet is coming to Northeast Florida.
ORANGE PARK, Fla. - Nov. 18, 2015 - PRLog -- Thrasher-Horne Center Executive Director Denton Yockey has announced two dance touring performances for early 2016: Thodos Dance Chicago and the Moscow Festival Ballet.

“We continue our mission throughout the year to present a wide range of cultural performances to the community,” said Executive Director Denton Yockey. “Both of these professional dance companies will be performing interpretive story ballets that are exciting, educational and appropriate for the whole family; a wonderful addition to a season already filled with live concerts and Broadway theater.”

Thodos Dance Chicago will perform A Light in the Dark: The Story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan on Thursday, January 28 at 7:30 PM. "Breathtakingly athletic," "powerfully beautiful” and "vibrant choreography" are among the ways audiences and press describe Thodos Dance Chicago. For the past 23 years, this ensemble of twelve versatile dance artists has performed with a captivating style using a variety of dance forms. The company's unique mission of inspiring expression through dance education, dance creation and dance performance has established Thodos Dance Chicago as an innovative presence in American contemporary dance.

A Light in the Dark: The Story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan was named one of the top 10 dances of 2013 by the Chicago Sun-Times. Choreographed by Thodos Dance Chicago Artistic Director Melissa Thodos and Tony Award winner Ann Reinking, this story ballet is based on the book "The Miracle Worker" by William Gibson and Anne Sullivan's autobiography.

Thodos Dance Chicago’s residency at Thrasher-Horne Center is funded in part by a grant received from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. A school time matinee will complement the full-length performance the day before on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 10:15 AM as well as master classes with area dance students throughout the week. Tickets for A Light in the Dark: The Story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan are $39 - $59 and are available at the Thrasher-Horne Center Box Office or online at THcenter.org.

The Moscow Festival Ballet returns this year with a matinee performance of Sleeping Beauty on Sunday, February 21 at 3 PM. The company was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko sought to realize his vision of a company which would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classic ballet.

Sleeping Beauty, a crowning jewel of Marius Petipa's career, is often considered the finest achievement of the classical ballet. Tchaikovsky was delighted with the invitation to write the music for a ballet based on Charles Perrault's well-known fairy tale. A baby princess, condemned at her christening by an evil fairy to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, is saved by the gift of the good Lilac Fairy, who declares the princess will only sleep until awakened by the kiss of a prince. The fairy tale, replete with a king and queen, fairies both good and evil, a beautiful princess and dream prince, magical stage effects, and courtly splendor, lent itself perfectly to the full evening ballet that was Petipa's pride. Tickets for Moscow Festival Ballet: Sleeping Beauty are $49 - $69 and are available at the Thrasher-Horne Center Box Office or online at THcenter.org.

The Thrasher-Horne Center is a not-for profit performing arts venue and conference center owned and operated by St. Johns River State College. It is located on the Orange Park campus at 283 College Drive in Orange Park, Florida. Tickets and more information are available at (904) 276-6815 or online at THcenter.org.
