Adobe Brings Retina Display Support To Photoshop And Illustrator CS6 As A Free Update For All Users

Adobe has made good on its promise to deliver Retina Display support to two of its most-used graphics programs, Photoshop and Illustrator CS6. That means owners of Apple's Retina MacBook Pro (both the 13- and 15-inch versions) will now be able to edit and create graphics using the programs in native resolution, instead of seeing the admittedly ugly non-optimized visual resources both previously provided.

Adobe has made good on its promise to deliver Retina Display support to two of its most-used graphics programs, Photoshop and Illustrator CS6. That means owners of Apple’s Retina MacBook Pro (both the 13- and 15-inch versions) will now be able to edit and create graphics using the programs in native resolution, instead of seeing the admittedly ugly non-optimized visual resources both previously provided.

Retina support for Photoshop at least was originally demoed on stage during Apple’s unveiling of the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro back in June. At the time, the feature was said to be in development and would make its way to the public later on. Eventually, a general fall date was pinned down, but that slipped past, too. Better late than never, though, and at least users didn’t have to wait until 2013.

The Retina update applies to all assets, including in-app icons and menus, as well as to actual images and illustrator vector files being edited. Low-cost Photoshop alternative added Retina support for its own image editing software back in August to serve consumers and individual users, but professionals and organizations who depend on Photoshop will definitely welcome the change.

Adobe has also recently introduced partial Retina display support to Lightroom via the 4.3 RC update, and in general appears to want to please the relatively small but vocal group of Retina-display owning Mac owners who also use their products for imaging. These new updates also follow Apple’s recent expansion of its Retina MacBook line-up, thanks to the introduction of the 13-inch model in October, which comes in at a lower price point than the 15-inch variety and could accelerate adoption of HiDPI resolution displays considerably.

If you’re a Photoshop or Illustrator user, get that updater running and enjoy. I know that’s what I’m doing.
