North Vancouver, BC (November 7, 2023) - Aqua Dental, a premier dental clinic located at 1501 Eastern Ave in North Vancouver, is thrilled to announce the implementation of cutting-edge 3D printing technology to create customized dental implants. As one of the first dental clinics in British Columbia to use 3D printing for implants, Aqua Dental can now offer patients perfectly fitted implants designed specifically for their anatomical structure.
It has been an evolving technology advanced by researchers and dental companies over the past couple decades. Here are some key contributors to the development of 3D printed implants:
Dr. Paulo Malo and Mário Herrera of Malo Clinic in Portugal - They were early pioneers in using medical-grade 3D printing for customized dental implants starting in the mid-1990s. Their research showed titanium implants could effectively integrate with bone.
Biomet 3i - In 1999, this dental products company was the first to receive FDA approval for 3D printed dental implants using electron beam melting (EBM) technology. Their devices featured porous titanium surfaces for better osseointegration.
SLM Solutions - In 2014, this metal 3D printing company introduced selective laser melting (SLM) technology to manufacture implants. SLM provided faster printing times and smaller, more complex geometries.
Formlabs - In 2016, they became the first company to receive FDA 510(k) clearance for a 3D printed titanium dental implant system fabricated through stereolithography (SLA).
3Shape - This Danish company develops much of the CAD software used to design custom 3D printed implants. Their TRIOS intraoral scanning system creates precise digital impressions.Other companies like Dentsply Sirona, Straumann Group, EnvisionTEC and Zimmer Biomet have also made significant contributions in bringing 3D printed implants to market.
"We are very excited to add 3D printing capabilities for dental implants to our clinic," said Dr. Sarah White, head dentist at Aqua Dental. "With 3D printing, we can ensure every patient receives an implant that integrates seamlessly with their natural teeth for optimal comfort, function and aesthetics."
Traditionally, dental implants are mass produced in limited shapes and sizes, requiring multiple adjustments and surgeries to get a proper fit. 3D printing eliminates this problem by fabricating implants from biocompatible metals like titanium that are tailored to the patient’s anatomy.
The process starts with the patient undergoing a detailed 3D scan of their mouth. This data is used to create a customized 3D model of the implant on specialized software. The dentist then reviews the design and makes any necessary adjustments. Once finalized, the 3D printer fabricates the implant precisely according to the virtual model.
3D printed implants integrate better with surrounding teeth and bone to increase stability. They also drastically reduce surgery and recovery times. Patients experience much less pain and discomfort compared to traditional implant procedures.
“A huge advantage of 3D printing is how it makes dental implant surgery minimally invasive,” said Dr. White. “There is no cutting or sizing required during surgery since the implant already fits perfectly. This lowers risk and speeds up healing time.”
In addition to 3D printed dental implants, Aqua Dental provides a complete array of general, cosmetic and restorative dental services to meet all oral health needs:
