NYPD Ordered to Allow the Public to Film in Precincts

By: NewsUSA

(Matthew Du, NewsUSA Reporter) - Federal courts typically allow individuals to video public servants in public spaces. Recordings can be helpful for transparency, especially when law enforcers are involved. However, the NYPD did not allow civilians to take footage of them, especially in police precincts. They also prohibited the public from viewing body camera footage.

In November 2023, a federal judge ordered the NYPD to allow civilians to record videos from within the police station. However, there are efforts to overturn the law as the NYPD claims to protect New Yorkers'  privacy.

Albeit this, the NYPD agreed to allow investigators to request a copy of body camera footage in December 2023.
