Leadership and Philanthropy Have Defined the Career and Life of Robert J. Levenson

UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / April 15, 2025 / With a decades-long career, Robert J. Levenson has made giving back an integral aspect of his life. For more than 17 years, he served Paycom Software Inc. as its first chairman and was a member of its board of directors. Although he retired in 2024, his leadership and strategic decision-making have left a positive impact on many boards of public and private companies and pro-bono boards of directors. He continues to channel his energy and financial resources into supporting worthy causes and making investments in early-stage companies.

Personal Loss Inspires a Drive to Succeed

Personal experiences have shaped Mr. Levenson's approach to business and life. One of the most significant events was losing his father at a young age. Taking on the caretaker role for his mother instilled a strong sense of responsibility in him, and his fierce determination propelled him forward.

At age 22, Mr. Levenson decided he would build a stable, successful career. The aim was to support himself while securing a better future for his mother, wife and children. His ambitions resulted in an illustrious 60-plus-year career.

A Stellar Career Path

Early in his career, Mr. Levenson recognized the benefits of taking prudent risks, while vigorously pursuing opportunities. Earning a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and business management from Kent State University in 1963 set a foundation for a remarkable journey. During his first role as a staff accountant at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, he gained invaluable financial expertise. Later, a move to IBM sparked a lasting interest in technology, which began the launch of his career in the technology-based information services industry. His desire for independence and entrepreneurial culture led to his co-founding of Central Data Systems Inc., where he played a key role in its growth, success and eventual IPO, before its later acquisition in 1975 by Itel Corp.

In the following years, Mr. Levenson held leadership roles at Automatic Data Processing (ADP), Medco, First Data Corp and Paycom Software Inc. These positions sharpened Mr. Levenson's ability to grow and manage large-scale businesses. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he occupied executive positions and served on boards for major companies. In 1999, he founded Lenox Capital Group, a venture capital firm that supports early-stage technology-driven service companies.

Mentorship and Business Philosophy

Mr. Levenson says success is a blend of intelligence, timing and calculated risk-taking plus strategic vision and, of course, recruiting and motivating top talent. The corporate leader often advises and serves as a mentor for young professionals. He has often stated that careers are built on seizing the right opportunities rather than following a predetermined path. This belief reflects how he based his own career choices on vision and recognizing potential opportunities.

By co-founding a company alongside more experienced partners, he learned from them how to maneuver in complex business environments. This guidance influenced his leadership style, which values strategic vision and relentless effort on execution and organizational talent development.

The Vision for Paycom and Beyond

Few accomplishments stand out to Mr. Levenson as much as his tenure at Paycom Software Inc. When he first encountered Paycom in 2007, the company was generating just $7 million in revenue and was forecast to break even during the coming year. During the seventeen years there, his vision and experience helped lead the company to rapid growth and increasing profits and to becoming a publicly traded entity, which today has nearly $2 billion in revenues and a market capitalization of approximately $12 billion.

Beyond business, Mr. Levenson is today, and has been for many years, dedicated to meaningful philanthropy. He supports several nonprofit organizations, including the Friendship Circle of New Jersey and the United Jewish Communities and Federation of MetroWest New Jersey, the Metropolitan Detroit Jewish Federation and Foundation, where he has established the Robert J Levenson Supporting Foundation. Additionally, he has a deep connection with Temple Israel of West Bloomfield Michigan, where he has been worshiping for the past 10 years.

Retirement has not signaled an end to Mr. Levenson's work but rather a shift in focus. "I devoted a lot of time and a reasonable amount of money to philanthropy," he says. "I expect to do more of that in my retirement as well as spending far more time with his family, extended family and friends."
