Innovative Company Robosport Technologies Is Re-Examining the Brain in Athletic Performance

LOS ANGELES, CA / ACCESSWIRE / May 23, 2022 / Athletes are arguably some of the most extraordinary beings in the world. They possess special talents evident in their numerous performances. As a sports enthusiast, watching these exceptional feats of athleticism can be a significant source of inspiration on many levels. But you might also be left with questions on how they can pull off these performances week-in and week-out. However, what's certain about these individuals is that they are mentally strong, with unmatched self-belief and determination that keeps them going every day. However, no matter the level of athleticism, an innovative company, Robosport Technologies is at the forefront of re-examining the brain in athletic performance in a whole new way.

Robosport Technologies is a sports performance enhancement company that seeks to answer whether modern sports training methods and technology actually fosters neuroplasticity. Led by a team of experts, Robosport is re-examining the brain in athletic performance, not from a "mental" or "psychological" perspective but more from a neurological or motor learning one. The team believes that the more a human can create more communication between different parts of the brain and its connection to the musculo-skeletal system, the more heightened their senses may become and the better able they can: 1. Efficiently filter environmental data through the senses, 2. process it faster, and 3. ultimately accelerate the decision making process, coupled with a motor movement that is more accurate and precise.

In many sports, athletes don't have time to think but only time to react. Robosport believes that the "edge" that athletes seek lies in teaching the brain to think faster on a subconscious level than a conscious one. Utilizing opposite side ("contralateral") training with randomization ("contextual interference") techniques, athletes' brains can be taught to produce reduced reaction time with precise motor movement without the need to think on a conscious level when they are in the midst of a game.

"Robosport's method to enhance sports performance is not a ‘mental' or ‘psychological' approach but a neurological one. We ‘open' up the brain's connectivity to the muscle by using opposite-side training and a randomized approach rather than a one-sided, repetitious manner," explains the Robosport Technologies team.

However, it's essential to acknowledge that impacting change in sports training through the re-examination of the brain is not easy. The initial challenge they faced was not developing the technology that embeds their methodology efficiently and productively but rather changing the industry's approach to age-old traditions in a manner and language that athletes and coaches could easily comprehend.

As a result, the Robosport Technologies team settled on starting their operations with the baseball batting tee. The traditional manner in using a batting tee starts with positioning the tee to the level the batter is most comfortable with. Batters then replace the ball on the tee in the same position over and over. While they may move the tee around the plate, they don't normally change the height, thus limiting the practice session to just one spatial plane. This form of tee practice does not promote longer term learning and memory retention because it creates a fixed groove or swing path and turns batters into robots.

Robosports first launch product is a robotic batting tee that randomizes the position of the ball, thus, preventing batters from hitting the ball in the same consecutive spot. This method forces batters to "re-think" each swing and keeps the swing path flexible and fluid while keeping the brain more reactive and better connected to the skeletal-muscular system. Robosport's training methodology will strongly promote and encourage opposite side training, not to turn batters into switch hitters, but rather, to open up communication between both sides of the brain and more effectively help coordinate the dominant side.

Robosport has conducted scientific studies with Dr Jacob Wilson and his team at ASPI Institute in Tampa, Florida, showing that when batters combined opposite side training with randomizing the position of the tee, batted ball accuracy increased by 9.1% and line drive hits jumped by 12.6% from their initial baseline measures. The study was published in the peer reviewed Journal of Sport and Human Performance.

Robosport has patented technology in commercial grade tees, data capture, processing and retrieval, wearable batting gloves, vibrational sensors and augmented reality. Two of their patents are currently pending in Japan.

While Robosport begins its journey with Baseball, the methodology is what has opened up the doors in developing new technologies for other sports, such as tennis, golf, and football. Unlike other companies that try to squeeze new technology into the sport specific training, Robosport tailors the technology to the motor movement required for each specific sport. As Sal LoDuca, founder and CEO of Robosport explains, "The frontiers of sports performance lies in better understanding what lies between the hand and eye and how to better connect that gap."
