Andreas Martin Fedrigo conquers Europe: Interview with the young 19-year-old photographer who is attracting the attention of art galleries from Zurich to Dubai

YOU ARE VERY YOUNG, WHEN HAVE YOU STARTED TAKING PICTUTRES?

I´ve taken my first pictures since I was 3 years. I´ve always known what I wanted to communicate with a shot, and sometimes I created a sort of set and directed to get the desired result.

AT 3 YEARS OLD, DID YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT DIRECTING WAS?

Yes, my mother was a TV and Theater director, my father is an architect and was a theater technical manager for years. I was only 6 months old when I attended my first show in the theater and at 9 months, I followed my mother and father on television sets. I had the opportunity to learn a lot without even realizing it.

WHAT LED YOU TO CHOOSE THE IMAGE AND NOT THE WORD TO TELL, TO AROUSE EMOTIONS?

I approached the art of photography in preschool age, so I didn't know how to write, and I expressed myself with images. Then in second grade I discovered that I was dyslexic and dysgraphic, so I thought that, if I continued to work in the field that I loved most, that of images, my problem would no longer be a handicap, but I could use it as an advantage.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND, IN WHAT SENSE HAVING SLD (Specific Learning disorders) IS AN ADVANTAGE?

A SLD person does not distinguish a b from a d; or a q from a p.

These letters move, they invert, which does not happen to "normal" brains. But this also means that my brain observes wonders that most people do not see. With the shot I can stop my truths and make them visible to others.

I KNOW YOU ARE ITALIAN; DO YOU EXHIBIT SOMETHING IN ITALY?

Yes, in November in Rome at the Dantebus Art Gallery in Via Margutta there will be my shot “INTERMINATI SPAZI DI LA DI QUELLA” dedicated to the poem “L’Infinito” by Giacomo Leopardi.

I love geometries and spaces that develop on multiple levels. In this shot we see a long dark, almost black horizontal line in the foreground. In the center, a white dot surrounded by an intense red makes, it’s the sun of a Maremman sunset. The light illuminates the sky in a radial pattern, creating games of various colors with the clouds.

Finally, the blue of the sky, above, parallel to the black of the trees, calms the observer's Soul, leading him to catharsis and to the awareness that, despite that hedge hiding much of our gaze and Truths, we can still hope to be reached by the Light of awareness.

I UNDERSTAND WHY YOU CALL THEM PHILOSOPHICAL SHOTS. THE OBSERVER TAKES A JOURNEY INSIDE HIMSELF AND INTO THE TRUE ESSENCE OF HIS WORLD. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE SHOTS YOU CALL "SOCIAL", I KNOW THEY HAVE ALREADY SPARKED CONTROVERSY IN SOME CIRCLES.

Yes, the photograph of the scandal (he says smiling) is "2020 FREEDOM DENIED" where I photographed a broken phone that had accidentally created black spots on Luther King's eyes. It was 2020, the year in which people were all put under house arrest. Many were losing their jobs because they did not want to be guinea pigs for new pharmaceutical products. The sudden appearance of those spots on Martin Luther's eyes seemed to me as if he was talking to me, as if he did not want to see this umpteenth wrong done by governments to people and so I decided to immortalize the moment.

YOU SEEM PLEASED THAT SOME PEOPLE ARE ANNOYED BY THIS PHOTOGRAPH OF YOURS.

Yes, I like that an image and its title can make people discuss or think. The shot is a lot, but the title is also an integral part of the shot.   See “OVER POPULATION…”

if I had called it a Tuscan landscape it would have communicated serenity, but having called it

Overpopulation…” puts the observer on alert. During my travels my SLD brain makes me see so much space, so much land... This shot becomes special and makes you think thanks to the marriage with its title.

PHOTO THAT HAS RECEIVED THE MOST PRAISE FROM GALLERY OWNERS?

SPIDERWEB is the shot that many gallery owners and industry insiders like.

Recently, the Thomson Gallery in Zurich (Switzerland) also sent me compliments for this shot and asked me for it for their next exhibition in November, this is the text from Thomson: "SPIDERWEB is truly mesmerizing. The delicate intricacy of the web, adorned with droplets of morning dew, against the ethereal, blurred background creates an atmosphere that is both haunting and serene. The way you’ve captured such a fleeting, natural moment speaks to your keen eye for detail and your ability to evoke a sense of wonder through subtle, yet powerful, imagery. This photograph would beautifully complement our galleries digital exhibition, which seeks to showcase artwork that invites reflection and captivates the viewer's imagination.

YOUR MOST EXPENSIVE PHOTOGRAPH?

Without a doubt “ICE CREAM” currently exhibited at the Andakulova Gallery in Dubai.

Put on sale at 150,000 euros, in a single authenticated copy in the world. The money will be paid directly to the non-profit association "Atelier di Creatività" which works to help young artists in every field: music, theater, writing, painting, photography, etc.

SO, IF ANY PHILANTHROPIST IS READING THIS, THEY SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO DO GOOD.

Yes, in fact, the Association has created the “YOUNG EXCELLENCE AWARD” and would like to donate scholarships for artists under 29 but to date it has no funding. This is why I chose to donate the shot for the fundraiser. It is a shot that I care a lot about, “ICE CREAM” was my first outdoor self-portrait with direction, it reminds me of my enthusiasm as a child.

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS, APART FROM DANTEBUS IN ROME AND THOMPSON GALLERY IN ZURICH, WHICH YOU ALREADY TOLD US ABOUT?

Now I have my shot “SPIDERWEB” in Paris at the Art Expo; and “SHY” at the Cirpriarte Gallery in Venice.  In November I will exhibit again at the Andakulova Gallery in Dubai the shot “BOOKS and ILLUSIONS” that I took in Bratislava; and at the “Casa dell’Arte” in Palma de Mallorca there will be “NIGHT TRAVELING” a director’s shot taken in an experimental set.

We say goodbye cordially and make an appointment to meet again in 6 months to find out if Andreas Martin Fedrigo has managed to realize his dream of selling his shot "ICE CREAM" to offer scholarships to the young artists who won the Young Excellences Award (if you want information on the sale write to info@desteproduction.com).
