The Chartis Group's Performance Leadership Award recently honored Intermountain Sevier Valley Hospital with its ‘Performance Leadership Award’

People from all over central Utah trust Intermountain Sevier Valley Hospital in Richfield, Utah for their healthcare needs, and now a leading healthcare advisory and analytics firm has further recognized the critical access hospital.
The Chartis Group’s Performance Leadership Award honors rural hospitals that achieve top quartile performance in three key areas: Quality, Outcomes, and Patient Perspective. The winners are determined based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX, which is a comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance in the United States.
Sevier Valley Hospital recently received its first “Performance Leadership Award” from The Chartis Group for excellence in patient outcomes. This award, which focuses on patient mortality and readmission rates, highlights the hospital’s commitment to improving patient care. Doctors, nurses, leadership, and other caregivers have worked hard to improve patient outcomes and quality at the hospital.
“It’s a privilege to care for our community. We love partnering with our friends and neighbors, everyone, on their health and wellness. That responsibility drives our focus every day,” said Brent Schmidt, Sevier Valley Hospital President. “We’re overjoyed to receive this award and to know that our efforts to improve patient outcomes are making a difference.”
Since its establishment in 1976, the hospital has been dedicated to improving patient services and outcomes. Under Schmidt’s leadership since 2018, the hospital has made significant strides. Recent upgrades include new cardiology and urology clinics, increased trauma care capabilities, and the addition of a Classic Air Medical base with a full-time helicopter which has reduced emergency transport times by half.
Despite its achievements, the hospital is sometimes labeled a “band-aid station.” However, Schmidt emphasizes that Sevier Valley Hospital provides comprehensive care for local patients. He also pointed to recent expansions, including bariatric surgery, imaging, infusion therapy, wound care, respiratory therapy, and medical lab services.
The hospital also leverages Intermountain Health resources, such as TeleHealth, Connect Care, and charity care, for local patients. These resources have made a significant impact on patient care. For instance, a high school student from Sevier County recently needed dialysis and was able to receive treatments locally thanks to the hospital’s collaboration with Primary Children’s Hospital. This improved the student’s quality of life and eased the time and financial burden the travel cost to him and his family.
“We’re thrilled we were able to help this student connect to pediatric resources and arrange local care,” Schmidt said. “This story shows the benefits of having a strong health system like we do with Intermountain Health.”
The hospital also demonstrated its capabilities in its response to a recent lightning strike incident near Salina, which affected dozens of youths. The hospital’s preparedness ensured all affected individuals received timely and effective care, and none were readmitted later.
As the healthcare needs of central Utah evolve, Sevier Valley Hospital remains committed to growing and adapting.
“We love our central Utah communities,” Schmidt said. “That’s why we strive to provide the best care possible. While it feels great to win awards and talk about achievements, we’re aware there’s always room for growth. I’m confident our patient outcomes will continue to improve and that our services will continue to expand.”
