The Valleant health education platform has published a new guide to weight loss supplements and how they work.

-- A recent NIH report found that 15% of American adults had, at some point, taken a weight loss supplement, not accounting for the additional 6 million patients currently taking prescription weight loss drugs. Despite this high number, educational material about how these supplements work once inside the body is scarce - a problem Valleant intends to solve with their latest publication.

In their new guide, Valleant covers the various subtypes of weight loss supplements currently available on the market, exploring in detail how each one acts on the body. It is important to note, Valleant says, that the vast majority of weight loss supplements have not been subject to rigorous clinical testing, and should only be used under the supervision of a medical professional.
As Valleant explains, appetite suppressants are among the most widely used dietary supplements. They are developed to mitigate feelings of hunger by introducing fiber and other difficult-to-digest ingredients into the stomach, “tricking” the body into feeling full even when it is not.
Carb and fat blockers, on the other hand, are intended to inhibit the digestive process and the process of nutrient absorption. These supplements prevent the body from producing the enzymes necessary to break down fat and carbs into sugars, retroactively lowering the calorie count of foods that have already been consumed.
Finally, Valleant covers fat burners, the other most commonly used type of weight loss supplement. Fat burners, as the name implies, have been developed to boost metabolism, causing the body to burn more energy through the breakdown of body fat.
As the guide then goes on to explain, supplement manufacturers rely on a wide range of natural and artificial ingredients to facilitate weight loss, many of which may present side effects if not consumed as directed. This, Valleants says, is why it is so important to contact a doctor before using any weight loss supplement - improper usage could result in conditions as serious as organ failure.
They also emphasize that diet and exercise are the backbone of any weight loss plan, and that patients should first pursue their fitness goals before turning to supplementation.
