Bioavailable Iron Supplements For Pregnancy-Related Anemia: Guide Published

Valleant has released a new guide to managing anemia during pregnancy through the use of nutritional supplements.

-- According to WHO data, 37% of pregnant women suffer from anemia at some point during their pregnancy, a condition that can lead to severe complications for the mother and the child alike. To address this serious problem, health educator Valleant is offering nutritional guidance that could prevent or correct the condition.

As Valleant explains in their new guide, anemia is a nutritional condition that can arise from a number of deficiencies, primarily iron and its various bioavailable forms. As such, iron supplements can be a viable way to address iron deficiency during pregnancy, though, as they highlight, not all iron supplements are necessarily the same.

Beginning with the basics, they explain that pregnancy can increase the volume of blood in the body by up to 50%. Iron, being a crucial component in the body’s manufacture of hemoglobin, must therefore be consumed in extremely high amounts during pregnancy —which is one of several deficiencies responsible for the often-strange “pregnancy cravings” that many women experience.

As such, Valleant recommends a number of iron supplements, each offering trade-offs in terms of absorption rate and potential side effects.

Ferrous sulphate, for example, is common for its affordability and general availability, but has been known to cause digestive discomfort—something which most pregnant women already experience enough of as-is.

Alternatively, Valleant recommends Heme Iron Polypeptide supplements, which are derived from animal sources and may, in turn, be processed by the body more easily. They are, however, often harder to locate and more expensive than their counterparts, making them non-viable in some cases.

Regardless of which option an individual chooses, Valleant reminds their readers that consulting their obstetrician is absolutely essential for any such decision during pregnancy. They may be able to make more specific recommendations based on the health of the mother and the unique needs of the child.
