Vale announces intention to invest in a steel mill
Rio de Janeiro, August 14, 2008 – Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (Vale) announces its intention to build a steel plant in Marabá, in the state of Pará, Brazil. The mill is planned to have a production capacity of 2.5 million metric tons per year of semi-finished steel. The total estimated investment amount to US$ 3.3 billion and the start up is expected to be in 2013.
The project encompass the installation of an integrated plant for the production of hot rolled coil (HRC), heavy plate and billet, with the possibility to be expanded to 5 million metric tons per year, as well as a coke plant, located in Barcarena, state of Pará, Brazil.
The project is estimated to create 16,000 new jobs in the construction phase, and 3,500 jobs in the operational phase.
In accordance to Vale’s strategy for the steel industry, we are looking for partners, aiming to promote the growth of Brazilian steel industry, thereby increasing consumption of high-quality iron ore.
