Come Together at First Integration Planning Team Boot Camp
Connection and collaboration characterized the spirit of Covidien and Medtronic Integration Planning Team members who attended the first Integration Planning Boot Camp on July 31 and August 1 in Minneapolis. The purpose of the Boot Camp was to share the integration planning architecture and launch the core team to drive integration planning to deliver merger value.
Integration Management Office (IMO) co-leads Geoff Martha of Medtronic and Bill Burke of Covidien opened the session with a robust discussion of the strategic value of the acquisition and the commonalities in the missions and values of the two companies. Both leaders emphasized the transformational power of the talent, expertise, products and services the combination will bring to address global health care needs.
Over two days, the Medtronic and Covidien team leaders were immersed in informational and dialogue sessions, covering topics including: detailed descriptions of the Integrated Management Office (IMO), Integration Program Architecture and Planning function, Organization and Talent, Communications, and Culture. During the plenary sessions, the teams engaged in finalizing work stream charters, identifying milestones and timelines and advancing initial plans. Efforts focused on sharing insights were made even better by the opportunities for the individuals from both organizations to connect as integration planning peers.
The leaders on the culture work stream, for example, led a compelling session around organizational culture that highlighted the importance of recognizing the most valuable behaviors, symbols and systems from both companies and mechanisms to preserve those values in the future.
Commenting on the response of the Planning Team during the session, Kate Hoepfner-Karle, Covidien VP for Talent and Organization Development, shared her thought about the timing. It is great we have leaders from both organizations working collaboratively on the integration. The kick-off is exemplary of this and sets the stage for our work going forward.
Kates counterpart, Tracy Platt, Senior HR Director - CVG Strategic Initiatives at Medtronic shared her thought about furthering the Medtronic Mission, This was a true proof point of the commitment to work together as One Team being collaborative, high performing, and purpose driven which is reinforced by nothing less than a common vision to transform healthcare.
While reviewing key principles for communicating throughout the integration process, the Integration Planning Team leaders discussed the importance of consistently sharing information about the integration planning process in a timely and transparent manner. With strong empathy for employee needs, integration leaders agreed to share decisions and information when feasible, and at the same time, to continue fielding questions and feedback from both organizations as a key formula to a successful integration.
The Boot Camp set the standard for high performance teamwork among Covidien and Medtronic Integration Planning Team members in developing and executing integration efforts efficiently and effectively. In his closing remarks, Geoff Martha summed up the Integration Planning Teams four goals for the integration after closing:
